Tanzania classifies its wild areas in different ways, each with different rules - meaning that the practices, and standards, of walking safaris differ widely. We have some first-rate walking safaris in Tanzania, with great guides - chosen, as usual, by seeing them first hand. Some of the real stars are the walking safaris done on fly-camping trips. Walks in the National Parks have to abide by the strict rules laid out by TANAPA (Tanzanian National Park Authorities); these rules have been put in place to make walking as safe as possible. No more than six guests are able to go on a walk at any one time; and they must be accompanied by at least one TANAPA qualified armed ranger, who must stick to specific walking routes. These regulations are however relatively new to Tanzania's national parks; and so we would only recommend walking from camps that we know have a consistent record for reliably good walking safaris, and well established guides.
Tanzania is an excellent destination for birders. Besides Lake Manyara and Arusha National Parks which are famous for water birds and other savannah and forest species, all the game parks in Tanzania have an amazing array of birdlife including Eurasian migrants. The most interesting part is that the birdlife may vary from park to park depending on habitats providing a richer viewing experience to the birder. It may be useful to learn that over 1,130 different species of birds have been recorded in Tanzania – the largest number in Africa second only to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
One of the most rewarding ways to experience authentic Africa is by trekking through the wilderness. Learn tracks and signs whilst on a hiking safari with our expert guides. There are several superb treks in the ecologically diverse Eastern Arc Mountains. These mountains are all that remain of the once great forest that covered the majority of Tanzania. They have been dubbed the Galapagos of Africa because of the high degree of endemism. We provide a range of routes of varying difficulty, specially selected for their spectacular views and ecological diversity. Locations range from the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Ngorongoro Crater Highlands, the Usambara Mountains, to the Rondo and the Mkonde plateaux. Walk types can be lodge-based guided walks, suitable for all ages and fitness levels, or adventure trekking itineraries only possible for physically fit clients prepared to camp in the bush. Porters are provided, but to keep environmental impact to a minimum we travel light.

Tanzania is home to the highest mountain in Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro (5895 metres), which is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Despite its height Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high summits, with most climbers reaching the peak (Uhuru Peak) with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and determination .
Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, also a World Heritage site and recently proclaimed a World Wide Wonder, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves proud the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildbeest's trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when migration is quite, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant's gazelle.
The great Serengeti wildebeest migration is the movement of vast numbers of the Serengeti's wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant's gazelle, Thomson's gazelle, eland and impala. These move in an annual pattern which is fairly predictable. They migrating throughout the year, constantly seeking fresh grazing and, it's now thought, better quality water. The precise timing of the Serengeti wildebeest migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year .
